Emerson L. Dorsey, Jr., a partner at Tydings & Rosenberg LLP and chair of its business department, has been appointed to the board of directors of Maryland Legal Aid.
Mr. Dorsey’s practice focuses primarily on providing outside general counsel services to numerous privately held companies as well as religious and tax-exempt organizations in Maryland. His experience includes business organization, real estate projects, financing, and contract law.
Maryland Legal Aid provides life-changing civil legal assistance to eligible residents in every part of the State. Since 1911, it has provided high-quality legal services to low-income, and marginalized individuals and communities--helping them remedy their civil legal issues and become empowered to overcome challenges, achieve stability and independence, and an overall better life. It is dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and basic human rights of clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. Its staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters all play important roles in ensuring that the legal playing field is leveled so that those most in need achieve equal access to justice. It is because of this diverse support that Maryland Legal Aid is able to be a voice to tens of thousands of economically disadvantaged and vulnerable Marylanders every year.
Maryland Legal Aid’s mission of advancing human rights and justice for all resonates with Mr. Dorsey, who has held leadership positions in organizations focused on the disadvantaged community and began his legal career as a Reginald Heber Smith fellow in Maryland Legal Aid’s Baltimore City office. Upon learning of his appointment, he said, “I am looking forward to playing an active role within Maryland Legal Aid to help it advance its critical mission.” Diane D’Aiutolo, the firm’s managing partner, said of Mr. Dorsey’s appointment, “we are proud of Emerson’s leadership and dedication to the principle of giving back to the community.”
